Time to Put Away the 3-D Glasses?

Today the Los Angeles Times film columnist, Patrick Goldstein, gave special attention to Robert Ebert's biting piece in Newsweek about why he loathes cinema's ongoing 3-D phenomenon , as well as the renown critic's unsurprisingly harsh opinion of the latest product of the 3-D movement, M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender.

But the truth of the matter is despite the validity of Ebert's argument against 3-D (a personal favorite is that it can create nausea and headaches...that one might be a stretch Robert, but I'm with you on the rest) , the year’s top three films- Alice in Wonderland, How to Train Your Dragon, and Clash of the Titans, were all projected in 3-D and the trend has no signs of slowing down.

Also worth noting is Goldstein's frank but perhaps on the money assessment of Shyamalan's career descent, "The film represents another critical drubbing for Shyamalan, whose stock has continued to plummet after the phenomenal success of The Sixth Sense, which is looking more and more like a flukish bolt of inspiration from a Hollywood hack, not a polished gem from a game-changing filmmaker. " Ouch.
