Showtime's Entertainment President, Robert Greenblatt, will be leaving the network after seven years, replaced by Imagine TV's David Nevins. Reportedly, Greenblatt's contract will soon be up and insiders note that he has never been one to stay at a job for an extended period of time.
But this still may register shock and surprise to many as Greenblatt is the primary reason Showtime is no longer viewed as the poor man's HBO, but a formidable and possibly equal rival instead. Californication, Dexter, Nurse Jackie, The Tudors, United States of Tara and Weeds represent the majority of Showtime scripted programming that Greenblatt has fostered during his reign. These shows matched solid cable ratings with strong critical acclaim, and have won an impressive sampling of awards. Dexter is coming off its strongest season to date and will be a likely front runner at the upcoming Emmys to not only be nominated, but to win Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series (Michael C. Hall) and Oustanding Supporting Actor in A Drama Series (John Lithgow).
Greenblatt jumped to Showtime after leaving the Greenblatt Janollari Studio which he founded with David Janollari and produced a number of shows, most notably HBO's Six Feet Under, a drama that would have fit perfectly within the current slate of Showtime programs that came to be under Greenblatt.
