Yesterday at the Mashable Media Summit in New York City, Keynote speaker Edward Norton introduced Crowdrise, a new website dedicated to fostering social good by allowing users to easily build web-based fundraising campaigns that utilize the power of social media.
The site concept builds off the micro-donation, community driven fund-raising model proven so successful during the Obama campaign and already has fostered participation by many high-level celebrities (Will Ferrell, Jonah Hill, and Elizabeth Banks to name a few).
I decided to test the site this morning and within 10 minutes put together a full campaign that integrated my entire social graph. Very cool and very easy. Beyond the site's robustness, ease-of-use and potential for social media integration, Crowdrise also has a built-in point system that rewards users for being active by giving them prizes. Essentially, fundraising becomes a game.
I think Crowdrise has the potential to be a great tool for a variety of future brand and celebrity campaigns (or just if you need to raise money for your local PTA) and it will be interesting to the many ways it will surely be used.
