T-Mobile kicks off the World Cup with massive viewing party

World Cup 2010 fever is upon us and it officially began this morning when Mexico and host country South Africa kicked off the inaugural match of world's largest and most exciting sporting event. Fans from across the world got together with friends and family to celebrate the beginning what will surely be a month of intense competition and nationalist fervor.

T-Mobile (client) joined in these festivities by throwing a massive viewing party celebration at Plaza Mexico in Lynwood, CA. Over 9000 fans came down at the early hour of 4:30AM PT to view the opening match together on massive screens stationed all around the plaza.

TV personality Mario Lopez was on hand to host the event and kept the crowd entertained throughout the morning with a series of games, musical acts, and appearances by local Chivas team stars.

When asked why T-Mobile decided to throw the event, Mark Stockdale, director of Hispanic marketing for T-Mobile USA, said “Soccer is the most popular sport in the world. This year’s opening match provided the perfect opportunity for T-Mobile to give Southern California Mexican National Team soccer enthusiasts and their families the chance to experience the action, while cheering alongside thousands of fellow fans."

And an experience it was. If the energy that was seen today keeps up throughout the tournament, this is going to be a great month. Let's hope we see the same energy from USA fans tomorrow!
