Some are suggesting that this could be the worst summer movie season in recent memory as consumers suffer from "
sequilitis." Does this mean the studios will rethink their focus on tentpoles around "existing properties"? Probably not yet, as they will still look to reduce marketing costs by relying on properties that need no introduction to consumers. But, if this summer fails to have its DISTRICT 9, PARANORMAL ACTIVITY or ZOMBIELAND, perhaps studios will miss the financial rewards that come from giving new filmmakers and fresh voices an opportunity to emerge.
